Confidence vs Fear – They can work together.
“The psychology reinforces the same core message: fear and confidence are not opposites. They are different systems operating at the same time.”
A hockey player can experience a genuine threat response while still believing they possess the skills and strategies needed to respond effectively.
1. Fear is a nervous-system response
When a player anticipates a high-pressure situation—a big game, an aggressive forechecker, a scoring opportunity, or the possibility of being benched—the brain may interpret it as a threat.
The sympathetic nervous system activates:
This is often called the fight-flight-freeze response. In hockey, it may appear as:
These reactions are protective, not evidence of weakness. The nervous system is preparing the player to respond to something it considers important.
The problem isn’t necessarily the activation. The problem is how the player interprets and directs it.
2. Appraisal determines whether pressure feels like a threat or challenge
Psychologically, athletes constantly evaluate two things:
If the player believes the demands exceed their resources, they experience a threat appraisal:
“This is too much.”
“I can’t afford to make a mistake.”
“I’m not ready for this opponent.”
If they believe they have enough resources—skills, preparation, support, routines, and adaptability—they are more likely to experience a challenge appraisal:
“This will be difficult, but I have ways to respond.”
The situation hasn’t changed. The player’s interpretation has.
That’s why this reframe can be effective:
“My body isn’t telling me to run away. It’s giving me energy for something difficult.”
The goal is not unrealistic positivity. It is a more complete and useful assessment of the player’s resources.
3. Confidence is closer to self-efficacy than certainty
In psychology, athletic confidence is strongly related to self-efficacy: a person’s belief in their ability to organize and perform the actions a specific situation requires.
That means confidence is not:
“I know I’ll score.”
“I won’t make any mistakes.”
“We’re definitely going to win.”
Those statements depend on outcomes the player cannot completely control.
More stable confidence sounds like:
“I trust myself to read the play.”
“I can stay engaged after a mistake.”
“I can adjust if my first option is taken away.”
“I can compete even when I don’t feel comfortable.”
This is response confidence, not outcome certainty.
A hockey player doesn’t control whether every shot goes in. They can control whether they scan, establish body position, choose a target, release decisively, and respond to the next play.
4. Fear changes attention
Under pressure, attention often narrows toward the perceived threat. This is sometimes called attentional tunnelling.
A defenceman worried about being beaten may focus almost entirely on the attacking player’s speed and stop noticing:
A forward afraid of making a turnover may look for danger rather than opportunity. A goaltender thinking about the previous goal may have fewer attentional resources available to track the next puck.
This creates an important cycle:
To interrupt the cycle, direct attention toward external, task-relevant cues:
These cues work better during competition than complicated technical instructions or commands like “Don’t be nervous.”
5. Overthinking can interfere with automatic skills
A skilled hockey player performs many actions automatically. Through repetition, skating, passing, shooting, and reading familiar patterns require less conscious control.
Under pressure, the player may start consciously monitoring movements that normally happen naturally:
“Where are my hands?”
“Is my weight in the right place?”
“What if I mishandle this?”
“Don’t miss the net.”
This can disrupt fluid execution—sometimes described as paralysis by analysis or reinvestment of conscious control.
That’s why short cues are valuable:
“Breathe. Scan. Commit.”
The cue anchors attention without requiring the player to consciously reconstruct the entire skill at game speed.
Technical analysis belongs mainly in practice and video review. During performance, the player usually needs a simple intention and trust in trained movement.
6. Trying to suppress fear can make it stronger
When a player tells themselves:
“I can’t be nervous.”
“Stop thinking about making a mistake.”
They must keep mentally checking whether the unwanted thought or feeling is still present. That monitoring can keep bringing it back into awareness.
A more effective response is acceptance:
“Nerves are here. They can come with me.”
Acceptance does not mean liking fear or giving in to it. It means the player stops using energy to fight an internal experience and redirects attention toward the play.
Psychological flexibility is the ability to:
A player can think, “I might fail,” without obeying the thought by playing cautiously.
7. Confidence is built through evidence
One of the strongest sources of self-efficacy is mastery experience—evidence that the athlete has handled a relevant challenge before.
Confidence develops when the player remembers:
The important evidence isn’t only success. It is also adaptation and recovery.
If confidence depends only on goals, assists, wins, or praise from the coach, it will remain fragile. If it is built around controllable behaviours, it becomes more durable.
Instead of asking only, “Did you play well?” ask:
8. Avoidance reinforces fear
When a player avoids carrying the puck, physical battles, shooting opportunities, or difficult matchups, they may feel immediate relief.
That relief teaches the brain:
“Avoidance kept me safe, so the situation must have been dangerous.”
This is negative reinforcement: avoiding the feared action removes discomfort, making avoidance more likely in the future.
Confidence grows through gradual, manageable exposure:
For example, a player afraid of making mistakes under pressure could progressively practice:
The lesson becomes:
“Pressure feels uncomfortable, but I can function inside it.”
9. The shift-reset routine is emotional regulation
The reset between shifts works because it addresses several psychological systems:
Release
A longer exhale can help reduce physical activation and muscular tension.
Review
Identify one useful piece of information:
“I didn’t scan before receiving the puck.”
This is different from judgment:
“I’m playing terribly.”
The first statement guides adjustment. The second attacks identity.
Refocus
Choose one controllable cue:
“Shoulder check early.”
This protects attention from getting trapped in the previous play.
Re-enter
Commit to the next shift rather than waiting to feel completely comfortable.
The full internal script might be:
“Exhale. I rushed that play. Scan early. Next shift.”
10. Fear, confidence, and courage perform different jobs
A helpful technical distinction is:

That final state is often what high-level competition demands.
A complete explanation for players
“When pressure rises, your brain and body begin preparing you for something important. Your heart may beat faster, your breathing may change, and your attention may narrow. That is fear doing its protective job. It doesn’t automatically mean you are unprepared.
Confidence is not the absence of that response. It is your belief that you have skills, preparation, routines, and choices available. You don’t need to know that the play will work. You need to trust that you can read, respond, and recover.
When you fight the feeling or wait for it to disappear, fear controls your attention. When you notice it, accept it, and return to a controllable action, you turn nervous energy into competitive energy.
Fear says the moment matters. Confidence says you have options. Courage is making the next play.”
The simplest coaching formula is:
Notice the response → Interpret it constructively → Regulate the body → Focus on one relevant cue → Act decisively → Record the evidence.
